Geeks In Medicine and Friends

Hi! I'm Grey, 5th year medstudent from Northern Europe. At first I'd like to clarify our system of education that differs from the US/UK one...

You can apply to medschool straight after you graduate from highschool (at the tender age of 18). First two years are pre-clinical: anatomy, physiology, biochem, microbiology, pathology etc. Then the 3rd-6th years are clinical medicine education+rotations: internal medicine, surgery, OB-GYN, neurology, oncology etc. After graduation you have to work a total of 2 years at a primary healthcare center (PHC) before you are licenced medical doctor. So it's 8 years in total.

THEN if/when you want to specialize in your field of liking it's + 5-6 years more of work. So if you were interested in orthopedics+traumatology (they are a joined specialty around here) like I am, I would apply to a surgical program and work for 5-6 years under education. So I'd be turned from a high school graduate to an independent specialized surgeon in 14 years.

How does that sound? :)

So, as I said, I'm on my 5th year, struggling with OB-GYN at the moment. Last summer I had the privilige to work as an replacement for a PHC physician for 2 months during holiday. (We're leaglly allowed to do so after 4th year as long as there is an older collegue for consults.)
My ultimate fandom is the new series of BSG. I live and breathe mostly for another Friday to come :) Obsession doesn't even come close to what I feel towards that particular series. Last year before Christmas I got hooked and watched the whole of season 1 + the already aired episodes of season 2 one after another when I was supposed to study for neurology finals. I was totally hooked.

Ok, now I've revealed my geeky secrets...Feel free to add me.
